Environmental impact

Enabling people to live long and healthy lives is what drives us each day, and we know protecting our planet and its ecosystems is essential for supporting the health of the people who live on it. By extension, we know it is our responsibility to tread as lightly as possible so our environmental impact meets that shared in the vision for our company.

While our production operations are small in scope, we are nevertheless committed to measuring and understanding our environmental impact and reduce it where we can.

CO₂ emissions

Climate change represents one of the greatest current threats to global health, and Hansa strongly supports the ongoing international efforts to limit global warming. To show this support, our words are backed up with action: nearly two thirds of the energy we use is completely renewable. While this is a start, we are currently working to quantify our emissions and reduce them further, and are in the process of establishing targets that will allow us to showcase our progress in this important aspect of our business.

While the nature of our commitments to scientific exchange makes certain travel-related emissions necessary, we are nevertheless mindful about the journeys we choose to make. While certain trips are of vital importance to our work, such as representation at international congresses and meetings, we aim to reduce where possible unnecessary travel through the utilization of new virtual technologies and opportunities.

Waste and environmental contamination

We are also keen to safeguard against pollution by reducing as much as possible our use of environmentally hazardous substances and the production of harmful waste products in our activities.

Our product is an organic molecule, an enzyme derived from a living bacteria, and therefore is completely degraded by the body on use. The limited discharges made from our laboratories consist of common salts and biodegradable organic substances. For more harmful by-products and substances, strict handling and disposal routines are in place.
